Back to Sunday School

{ August 6th, 2012 }

It’s that time of year again!  For those of you who took the summer off from Sunday school lessons and opted for an exciting Vacation Bible School theme in lieu of more traditional weekly classes, it’s time to rev it up and get back into the swing of things. For churches who continued curriculum on a weekly basis all summer, this may be the time to begin a new year of lessons.

By now, you have decided on which curriculum your church team will use. It is now before you. Take time to examine it. This is a good time to invite a group to review and determine what lessons you will focus on this year.  How long will you spend on each bible theme? Find out what materials you will need and if extra adults will be needed. This is a good time to determine class size and total expected number of participants.

Did you check your inventory at the end of the school year? If not, now is the time to do so. At this meeting, wear work clothes! Once you are knee deep in supplies, clean out and organize! Remove outdated or damaged material…some items can be donated to needy organizations! Keep an inventory of stored supplies so you do not purchase items you already have in storage!  We have found it beneficial to place most of the supplies in clear container and label them. This method makes clean up and returning materials more efficient also! This whole process can usually be done with a team of 4-8 volunteers.  It is wise to ask people who participate in the planning or teaching, those who use the supplies.

Order supplies and crafts now so you can get all the products you need!  Many publishers have similar themes, such as “creation” and some churches are ordering their craft kits early. Watch for Guildcraft’s (New) Digital Fall Flyer for lots of new ideas!

Have a kick -off party!  Invite children and adults alike.  Let them know what exciting things are planned for the upcoming year.  Be sure to include some interactive activities, such as an arts and crafts table and snacks!  Decorations and accessories will keep the interest level high. Include the volunteer teachers in this venue so the children will have a face to connect with when they come to church school the first time.

This is a good time to hand out a schedule to the parents and include any “wish list” items you may need for your classroom.

Don’t forget to announce the kick- off party and the starting date for Sunday school during your worship time and in all your media, such as your weekly bulletin, monthly newsletter, any online contact, on your sign out front and your website. It’s important for both your current congregation and your entire community to know what’s happening for Christian education opportunities at your church.

May God bless your work this coming year!
