VBS Decorating Ideas and Tips – Aviation!
{ April 24th, 2012 }
One thing that can really make VBS fun is when you spend time transforming your church into your VBS destination! Decorating brings VBS themes to life and helps your VBSers imagine they are on great journeys! So to help you out this week, we will be posting decorating ideas and tips for some of the VBS themes!
Aviation VBS
Cardboard Boxes – Use these to create the inside look of an airplane hangar. Stack them near doors, windows and more! Ask the members of your congregation to bring in empty cardboard boxes.
Pictured above: wood panel backdrop, sky backdrop, plastic clouds, bi-plane cutouts (sold exclusively at Guildcrafts) and cardboard boxes!
Wood Panel Backdrop – Backdrops are an easy way to decorate and to cover blank walls. You can purchase a variety of backdrops from Guildcraft Arts & Crafts.
Volcano – Using a large sheet of brown cardboard, cutout a volcano shape. Once you have done that use red cellophane to create flowing lava down the volcano. Then add some green paper (to look like grass) to the base of the volcano to finish it off!
Inside the Airplane – Use the airplane windows (pictured above) to decorate walls, doors and more to create the feeling of being inside the airplane! Line up chairs along the wall near the window so it feels like the kids are walking through the aisle of the airplane.
Christmas Lights – Ask members of your congregation to let you borrow their Christmas lights. You can do a lot with them, like hanging them from the ceiling to create a night sky, or to make airplane aisle lights.
Night Sky – Creating a night sky couldn’t be easier with our starry sky backdrop and moon cutout.
Ask for Bed Sheets -Our Facebook Fan Kristie Shackelford Abshire said, “We use lots of sheets no matter what the theme. You can get them in any color; everyone has old ones they are usually able to donate, and the cheaper or more worn the better because it makes them lighter and easier to hang. Also if you if you use paint on them they fold up easily for storage.”
Take Them Around The World – Using the sky backdrops, create amazing sky scenes, using airplanes and cloud cutouts! You can even add some dimension to the clouds by using stuffing or tissue paper!
Water Falls – Using brown paper or brown paper bags as the “sides” of your water falls, crinkle the paper or bags to make them look like rocks. Tape them down to the wall, in the shape that you would like your water falls to take. Once you have the shape, you will need blue sheets, blue streamers or white paper to drape down the middle to create the look of water. If you wish to create a river, use blue cellophane and tape it to the floor. You can even tape paper creatures to the one side of the cellophane so that it looks like they’re in the water!
Under the Sea – Create a fantastic under the sea feeling with this beautiful coral reef prop and underwater backdrop!
Decorate your tables – Using a white table cloth, some red tape and some mini airplanes, create runway scenes! Your kids will get a kick out of this (and so will you).
