VBS Decorating Summary!
{ April 27th, 2012 }
We think it’s safe to say that decorating your church for VBS can be a lot of work, but with the right resources it can be fun and easy! By providing you with decorating tips and ideas this week, we hope that it helped you and your church figure out some creative ways to decorate. If we didn’t focus on your VBS theme and you’re still having problems coming up with ideas, we have listed some general decorating ideas and tips that can be useful for any theme.
Photo Props – these are a neat way for you to take pictures of the kids and send them home with a funny memory of VBS!
Ask for Bed Sheets -Our Facebook Fan Kristie Shackelford Abshire said, “We use lots of sheets no matter what the theme. You can get them in any color; everyone has old ones they are usually able to donate, and the cheaper or more worn the better because it makes them lighter and easier to hang. Also if you use paint on them they fold up easily for storage.”

Artificial Plants – By using artificial plants and trees you can really transform you indoor areas and classrooms into amazing VBS scenes. These are pretty easy to come by, just ask members of your congregation and you will end up with a “jungle” of plants and trees!
Colored Butcher Paper – Our Facebook Fan Christen Louise said “Colored Butcher Paper makes great “trees”, “rocks”, “bushes” etc. Plus it is totally recyclable at the end of the week! Some of the “trees” from the previous years are now part of the decor of our preschool wing!
”
Cardboard Boxes – You can build hot air balloon baskets, pyramids, lions and just about anything you can imagine with cardboard boxes, they are an inexpensive way to “jazz” up your VBS. Ask members of your congregation to donate any unused boxes!

Props with Backdrops - Our Facebook Fan Debbie Lee said “I used the Under the Sea Backdrop to decorate for The Great Barrier Reef Crafts area at my VBS Conference. Add some “bubble” Christmas ornaments hung with fishing line, a tan sheet for the sandy ocean floor, some coral cut out of foam board or poster board, a few fish & a bubble machine! So much fun!!”
Backdrops – Seven words “they cover a lot of wall space”. Backdrops will instantly transform your ordinary classroom into a beach, castle, sky or airplane hangar. They are easy to use and simple to put up, we highly recommend trying them out if you haven’t used them before. You can even reuse them for other events!
Many Uses for Cardboard – Our Facebook Fan Kathy Hoffmannbeck said “Cardboard is our go to item. You can cut it into almost any shape, put pieces together to make structures and paint it to look like anything! The best thing is it stays together well enough that we can pass our decorations on to smaller churches to help them (we average 1000 children at our VBS).”

We made Coral Reef sticks for our VBS kickoff meeting. They were made by taking pretzel sticks, dipping them in white chocolate, and covering with colored sprinkles. This was easy and yummy!
